On January 13, 2022, Sapienza University awarded an honorary doctorate in Advances in infectious diseases, microbiology, legal medicine and public health sciences to Anthony Fauci. The award was given for Fauci’s fundamental role in the study of infectious and immune-mediated diseases, with particular regard to the first pioneering studies on HIV infections and the development of measures to contain transmission and effective therapies against AIDS.
The institutional greetings of Thomas D. Smitham, Chargé D’affaires at the U.S. Embassy to Italy opened the ceremony, followed by the speech of Rector Antonella Polimeni, the Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Medicine Carlo Della Rocca, and the coordinator of the PhD in Advances in infectious diseases, microbiology, legal medicine and public health sciences Stefano D’Amelio. At the end, Anthony Fauci delivered his keynote lecture entitled “COVID-19: Lessons Learned and Remaining Challenge.”
