On March 13, 2025, the proposal for the appointment of Dr. Francesca Mariotti as President of the National Agency for New Technologies, Energy, and Sustainable Economic Development (ENEA) was presented by the Minister for the Environment and Energy Security, Gilberto Pichetto Fratina. The announcement was made during the Senate session on March 18, 2025. The necessary review process was assigned to the 8th Permanent Commission (Environment, Ecological Transition, Energy, Public Works, Communications, Technological Innovation) in an advisory capacity on March 18, 2025, with a deadline set for April 7, 2025.
Francesca Mariotti is a lawyer and certified public accountant. She has managed complex and multidisciplinary organizations, gaining extensive experience as an independent board member and auditor for both listed and unlisted companies, including industrial and financial sectors. From 2020 to 2023, she served as the Director General of Confindustria, coordinating both national and international institutional activities and overseeing the association’s administrative functions. Specialized in taxation and accounting, after working in tax consulting and at banking associations, she led Confindustria’s Tax Policy Area for nearly 10 years, defining the association’s tax, accounting, and state aid policies while handling institutional relations in the economic field.
Since 2024, she has been an independent board member of Almaviva S.p.A., an Italian group leading the IT and digital innovation sector, and is part of its Sustainability Committee. She also serves as the President of the Board of Statutory Auditors of CESI S.p.A., a world leader in testing, inspection, and certification in the electrical sector.
Since 2022, she has been an independent board member and a member of the Remuneration Committee at Aboca S.p.A., a healthcare sector benefit corporation. She has also been a full member of the Board of Statutory Auditors at Edulia del Sapere Treccani S.r.l. since the same year.
Her previous roles include similar positions at major companies in the media (Mediaset S.p.A.), banking (Widiba S.p.A.), and healthcare (I.W.S. S.p.A.) sectors.
Since May 14, 2024, she has been a board member at Saipem S.p.A., where she chairs the Remuneration and Appointments Committee and participates in the Sustainability, Scenarios, and Governance Committee.
She has served as a member of various institutional bodies and committees, including currently presiding over the Ecolabel and Ecoaudit Committee at the Ministry of Environment and Energy Security, the body responsible for the assignment of the ecological quality mark and evaluating adherence to the EU eco-management and audit scheme. In the past, she was a member of the Corporate Governance Committee at Borsa Italiana, the Executive Bureau of Business Europe, vice-chair of the Market Operators and Investors Committee at CONSOB, and a member of the Supervisory and later the Administrative Board of the Italian Accounting Organization. She has contributed to several reform projects as a specialized interlocutor at Ministerial Committees.
