With 1st place in “Classics & Ancient History”, Sapienza University of Rome is once again the world leader in Classical Studies in the QS Ranking by Subject 2021, published on March 3, 2021, the only Italian University to boast first place at the international level. The University had already achieved top position in 2018, confirmed it in 2019, and then dropped to the second position in 2020, behind the University of Oxford.
The University ranks 10th internationally with Archeology (first in Italy) and grows in the MacroArea “Arts & Humanities”, ranking 65th (+16 positions compared to 2020).

“This success is the brilliant result of commitment and passion, in line with our University’s tradition of excellence in the field of classical studies. We have innovative courses taught entirely in English, study spaces among statues and decorative friezes in the Museum of Classical Art, but also cultural projects like, for instance, the Theatron Project where students can adapt and stage Greek and Latin texts”, says Rector Antonella Polimeni. “We are talking about a subject area that is the founding value base of our society and as such should be preserved and passed on to the new generations, not least because it offers analytical tools and transversal skills that make all the difference in a labour market and socio-cultural context that is evolving rapidly”.
In the rankings by subject, Sapienza reaches 21 positions among the top 100 universities worldwide, placing 41st in the world (1st in Italy) in Physics & Astronomy and 71st in the world (1st in Italy) for the Macro area Natural Sciences.
For the first time, Sapienza is ranked in the 51-60 bracket in Dentistry, within the Top 100 ranking taken by QS for this specific field.

Among the top 100 universities are Anthropology, Development Studies, Nursing and Psychology, all subjects in which Sapienza ranks first in Italy; and also Architecture, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Dentistry, History, Law, Mathematics, Modern Languages, Mechanical Engineering, Pharmacy & Pharmacology, Statistics, Theology.
